The Laboratory for Analytic Genomics develops and implements strategies for identifying relationships between genetic variation and psychiatric disease. State-of-the-art molecular technologies, including genomewide association studies (GWAS) and next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms, produce a flood of data capturing variation across the entire genome. To manage this unprecedented flow of information, novel analytic methods are required to separate signal from noise.

As part of our NIMH-funded EUREKA (Exceptional, Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration) award, we are using both GWAS and NGS approaches to identify rare variants associated with schizophrenia. A particular focus is on recessive alleles, which have not been widely studied in psychiatric genetics. We also work closely with the Laboratory of Intermediate Phenotypes to develop more effective methods for parsing complex genotypic and phenotypic information into clinically significant relationships.
